  Meet Twiglet!

Please grab your hankies and join NBGR as we share one of our most touching happy ending stories, along with congratulating little Miss Twiglet and her new family Christie & Weston Pace, their 3 children, and Nalani on Twiglet's 1 month "gotcha day" anniversary!

Their heaven sent love story began two months ago when Twiglet's former mom contacted NBGR after a series of very unfortunate life changes and health issues led her to the unimaginably heart wrenching realization that she could no longer care for Twiglet in the manner she deserved. So with a heavy heart and many tears, Twiglet's mom asked NBGR if we could find Twiglet a new home where she would be loved and cherished just as she has been all her life.

One month earlier the unimaginable happened to the Pace family. While Christie and her husband Weston were taking their children to school, their home caught on fire. Tragically, all their beloved pets died from smoke inhalation, many with special needs, including several NBGR senior and special needs dogs Christie lovingly cared for.

For many years, Christie devoted herself tirelessly to sharing her life with disabled pets, and enlightening others to the love these little beings have to share, eventually becoming the founder of Nakio Underdog Rescue. The name sake of her rescue, Nakio, had been left in an abandoned home in the dead of winter, and lost all his paws to frostbite.

The Pace family came to the rescue, and in an effort to share Nakio’s story of being the first dog in the world to have four prosthetic legs, Christie wrote a book, “Stubby and His Magic Boots” in which she encouraged compassion and love for those who are different. Christie and Nakio made many appearances in schools and book stores, and Nakio was a finalist in the 2013 American Humane Hero Dog Awards in the category of Emerging Hero Dog.

The grief, pain and loss this family has endured since the fire is unfathomable to us, yet despite it all, soon Christie and her family were reaching out to other special needs dogs. First they welcomed Nalani, an adorable Golden Retriever puppy born with a defective front leg who will need a prosthetic leg soon. This sweet little girl quickly helped the Pace family begin the long road to healing their wounded hearts.

But something was still missing - a special little Griff who needed them just as much as they needed another little wookie in their life. Enter Twiglet, a senior Griff with limited vision who had endured a grievous loss when she said good bye to the only home she had ever known two months earlier, and dreamed longingly of a family she could call her own, and who would love her forever and ever.

From the moment they first met, it was evident that this was indeed a match made in heaven, and no doubt guided along by the Pace's soul babies smiling upon them from the heavens above.

We dedicate this beautiful song - "When You Wish Upon a Star" - to Twiglet, Nalani, Christie, Weston, Chris, Noah, Whimsy and the Pace's soul babies in heaven - because dreams really do come true! https://youtu.be/A-mDfjoLkDg

A very special thank you to Sue Janson's husband James who met the 1st leg of Twiglet's rescue transport in Emporia, KS then transported her to Larry & Nancy Moody in Augusta, KS who transported her to Phyllis Shipman in Oklahoma City where she lovingly fostered Twiglet until our sweet girl became a full fledged member of the Pace family 1 month ago.
